Support our Seniors, Protect hours of work! CUPE members Rally Outside Sienna Senior Living's Head Office to defend Hours of Work from employer cuts

Markham, ON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sienna Senior living is one of Canada’s most profitable Long Term Care providers. They operate homes across the country, benefitting from government subsidies and other public investments. Despite the recently announced $4.9 billion investment from the Ontario government to help with staffing and retention for PSWs. Sienna has made the regrettable decision to cut 1300 full time hours from their schedule at the Case Manor facility in Bobcaygeon ON, in violation of the workers collective agreement and despite the newly announced funding.

The affected workers, members of CUPE 3204, immediately took action to fight back against these dangerous cuts to their hours of work. They held a rally outside of the home in Bobcaygeon ON, delivering a letter to the local MPP demanding clarity on the employer’s claim that budget cuts were the driving force for these cuts, and filed multiple grievances. On March 5th, as the matter comes before the Labour Board in an expedited Arbitration hearing, CUPE 3204 members and allies will be holding a solidarity rally outside of Sienna Senior Living’s Head Corporate Office in Markham.

“Less hours don’t just mean less money for the workers. It also increased workloads. It means our employer is expecting us to work harder, and faster, trying to fit everything we are expected to do in our usual schedules into 20% less time. This isn’t just unsustainable, it’s dangerous,” said Ashlee McKibbon, Vice President of CUPE 3204. “It’s also dangerous for our residents. The vulnerable seniors we support. It means we will have less time to provide the quality care that they rely on us for, which will directly translate into a reduction in quality of care.”

The rally will take place between 11:30 AM and 1:00 P.M. Thursday, March 5, 2026 in Markham. The Media is invited to join the rally at noon, when members of the union, and representatives from CUPE Ontario will be available for comment.

Time for Doug Ford to face reality: CUPE Ontario

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Only three weeks into his 21-week summer break, Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s popularity is crashing. But his response hasn’t been to reverse any of his government’s disastrous decisions or listen to the concerns of ordinary Ontarians. Instead, he cries “fake” at a recent poll that finds him to be Canada’s least popular premier and casts slurs on the methodology of a professional polling firm. “This time Ford has not only borrowed from the Trump playbook; he’s stolen one...

Danielle Smith’s expensive, American-style health care scheme coming to Alberta this fall

Edmonton, AB--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This week’s announcement that the UCP government is pushing forward with a two-tier private healthcare model spells more bad news for Albertans needing care and for our entire public healthcare system. Despite a legal opinion substantiating that Bill 11 breaches the Canada Health Act, this government is determined to push forward with their privatization agenda to enrich their friends and healthcare insurance companies at the expense of Albertans. “The announced r...
