Texas Court Dismisses Claims Against Tahir Javed, Sanctions Plaintiff Tanweer Ahmed
Javed files motion for summary judgment, pursues counterclaims
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A Texas state district court has dealt a severe blow to businessman Tanweer Ahmed, dismissing most of his legal claims against business and political rival Tahir Javed and sanctioning him $10,000 to discourage future baseless lawsuits.
Mr. Ahmed’s lawsuit against Mr. Javed and several online media outlets alleged that Mr. Javed had taken undue credit and upstaged him in high-profile American and Pakistani political events, defamed him, and engaged in other conduct that attacked his character, integrity, and reputation. Mr. Ahmed asserted claims for defamation, infliction of emotional distress, conspiracy, and tortious interference.
In response, Mr. Javed filed a Motion to Dismiss under the Texas Citizens Participation Act, a statute that provides expedited dismissal of claims that target protected speech or the right to petition. Represented by Houston-based business litigation firm Mahendru P.C., Mr. Javed argued that the petition failed to present colorable claims and lacked reasonable validity.
The 11th District Court of Harris County agreed with Mr. Javed. The court dismissed with prejudice Mr. Ahmed’s claims for defamation, infliction of emotional distress, conspiracy, and tortious interference, and sanctioned him in the amount of $10,000, finding the sanction “necessary to deter Mr. Ahmed from filing similar actions of this nature in the future.”
Mr. Javed has since filed a motion for summary judgment to dispose of Mr. Ahmed’s remaining claims which did not fall under the Texas Citizens Participation Act.
Mr. Javed also continues to pursue counterclaims against Mr. Ahmed, alleging that Mr. Ahmed teamed up with disgraced Fort Bend politician Taral Patel to post fake, defamatory, and outlandish news articles on “pay-to-publish” websites that Mr. Ahmed financed. These counterclaims further allege that Mr. Patel posted articles under a fake Facebook profile in a scheme similar to the one he ran for his former boss, Fort Bend County Judge K.P. George, and for which Patel pled guilty to two misdemeanors.
The trial court’s $10,000 sanction is not the first judicial rebuke Mr. Ahmed has faced. Last year, in a related court proceeding in which Mr. Javed sought pre-suit discovery from Mr. Ahmed, Mr. Patel, and others, a court ordered Mr. Ahmed to show cause why he should not be held in contempt for his failure to appear for his court-ordered deposition and ordered that he be brought to the Court by law enforcement personnel. Mr. Ahmed is currently appealing that show-cause order.
The suit is Tanweer Ahmed v. Jago Times et al., Cause No. 2025-35033, in the 11th District Court of Harris County.
