Joi + Blokes and Brigham Young University PhD Researchers Validate a Precision Medicine Model Impacting Inflammatory, Cardiovascular, and Metabolic Risk Biomarkers

Findings by Brigham Young University researchers, in collaboration with Joi + Blokes, reinforce the importance of personalized treatments and prevention

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Joi + Blokes, a national precision medicine and telehealth platform, announced the publication of a peer-reviewed clinical study in collaboration with Brigham Young University (BYU) that evaluates the outcomes of its proprietary, biomarker-guided precision medicine protocols. The study was published in the scientific journal Life and assesses changes in key inflammatory biomarkers among adults aged 40 to 69.

“This study evaluates a precision medicine framework applied in real clinical practice,” said Paul R. Reynolds, PhD, Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Brigham Young University and lead author. “By using objective blood biomarkers to guide individualized clinical decisions, the protocol was associated with consistent reductions in markers tied to chronic low-grade inflammation across age and sex groups.”

The 12-week observational study analyzed real-world data from patients receiving care through Joi + Blokes’ proprietary precision medicine model. Care decisions were driven by comprehensive lab testing and clinician judgment rather than symptom checklists, surveys, or AI-only recommendations.

The program evaluated changes in C-reactive protein, homocysteine, white blood cell count, ferritin, and thyroid autoantibodies. Across all cohorts, the precision-guided approach was associated with meaningful reductions in inflammatory biomarkers, and trends were consistent across participants in their 40s, 50s, and 60s:

  • C-reactive protein declined by approximately 33 to 46 percent
  • Homocysteine declined by approximately 29 to 37 percent
  • White blood cell count declined by approximately 22 to 28 percent
  • Ferritin improvements were most notable in men, while reductions in thyroid autoantibodies were more prominent in women

Benjamin T. Bikman, PhD, Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology, added, “This work supports the premise that precision medicine, when grounded in biology and clinician judgment, may influence inflammatory physiology in meaningful ways.”

Joi + Blokes’ model integrates diagnostic testing, clinician assessment, and personalized therapeutic protocols including micronutrients, hormone optimization, and peptide support when medically appropriate. Interventions are adjusted over time based on follow-up biomarker analysis, forming a closed-loop precision medicine system. With inflammation becoming a recent buzzword in health and wellness circles, Joi + Blokes’ study emphasizes the importance of measuring legitimate inflammatory markers in the body to work towards solutions.

“This publication validates our belief that precision medicine should be measured, not marketed,” said Katy Whalen, Co-Founder of Joi + Blokes. “Our proprietary protocols are designed to treat biology, not trends, and this study allows us to point to peer-reviewed clinical data evaluating that approach.”

“These findings reflect the importance of clinician-led precision medicine,” said Melissa Loseke, MD, Clinical Lead at Joi + Blokes. “Data matters, but interpretation matters more. Personalized care requires both.”

The authors note that the study is observational and hypothesis-generating. Findings demonstrate associations rather than causation, and individual results may vary. Larger randomized controlled trials are recommended.

Joi + Blokes also acknowledged the clinicians responsible for delivering the care underpinning the study.

“This research exists because of the rigor, consistency, and dedication of our clinical teams,” added Whalen. “Their commitment to evidence-based precision care made this possible.”
