AltaSea Taps LA City & LAEDC Veteran to Join Leadership Team
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, the world’s leading tech hub for the Blue Economy, today announced the hiring of Carolyn Hull as the nonprofit’s interim Director of Economic and Workforce Development. Hull, a seasoned leader in economic and workforce development across the Los Angeles region, will oversee AltaSea’s efforts to expand blue economy job opportunities and support the growing ecosystem of ocean-focused innovators at AltaSea. She will also continue to serve on AltaSea’s Board of Trustees.
“I am excited to support AltaSea in this interim role at a pivotal moment for the blue economy,” said Hull. “For years, AltaSea has demonstrated how climate solutions and economic opportunity can go hand in hand. I look forward to working with our partners to strengthen the workforce and economic development programs that will help our city continue to lead in this growing sector.”
As Interim Director of Economic and Workforce Development, Hull will guide AltaSea’s strategy to strengthen and grow the region’s blue economy workforce, build partnerships with industry, education, and community organizations, and support innovators and startups as they scale ocean-based climate solutions.
“Carolyn has been an invaluable asset on our Board for many years, so we are thrilled that she agreed to step into an expanded capacity to continue her work in building economic growth and workforce pipelines in Los Angeles,” said AltaSea President & CEO Terry Tamminen. “Her expertise in both workforce and economic development is well-respected, and we are excited for her to bring new ideas to help accelerate AltaSea’s work in connecting ocean innovation to quality jobs and opportunities for our local communities.”
Hull comes to AltaSea after five years as the General Manager for the Economic and Workforce Development Department of the City of Los Angeles, where she developed and led programs that sought to grow and improve Los Angeles’ economy while building a well-trained workforce. Previously, Hull served as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Industry Cluster Development at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC). In that role, she oversaw strategies and programs to promote job creation, business investment, and workforce development initiatives that align LA County’s workforce and education systems with industry needs.
Hull holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Science in Economics and Urban Planning from the London School of Economics. She also earned a Certificate in Real Estate Finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Hull succeeds Jade Clemons, who successfully helped to establish and grow AltaSea’s economic and workforce development initiatives, as well as lead public advocacy initiatives in a variety of blue economy sectors.
“From our work locally to advocating for the blue economy in Sacramento, Washington, DC, and Europe, Jade has been a tireless advocate for AltaSea. We wish her all the best as she pursues her next chapter,” said Tamminen.
