Ciena’s coherent router technology will enable Comcast to extend the reach of its current fiber deployments more than 100 km and deliver 100 Gb/s—capacity to serve residential, small to medium-sized business (SMB), enterprise, and community anchor institutions—to new and existing communities with unserved or underserved connectivity needs.

“We continue to expand our footprint so we can deliver next generation connectivity to as many communities as possible,” said Elad Nafshi, Executive Vice President, Chief Network Officer for Comcast Connectivity and Platforms. “Ciena’s coherent routing technology is the newest tool to help us pursue this goal as efficiently as possible. This platform can be useful in supporting our Rural Broadband and BEAD initiatives that are critical to improving digital opportunity across America.”

“Breakthroughs in network technology can redefine what’s possible for entire communities,” said Kevin Sheehan, CTO of the Americas, VP of Sales Engineering at Ciena. “Working together, Ciena and Comcast have brought this unique solution to market, allowing Comcast to deliver 100 Gb/s over longer distances without the need for expensive hub sites or power-hungry equipment. It can help accelerate broadband deployments and ensures that every community can benefit from fast, reliable connectivity.”

Ciena’s 5131 CAP not only enables Comcast to extend fiber 100 km or more through the use of coherent optics, but also significantly surpassing the reach of the existing DWDM fiber plant. The solution is deployed in a standardized, line-powered, weatherproof enclosure, simplifying installation and operation. Ciena’s technology reduces complexity and accelerates delivery by eliminating the need for costly, power-hungry cabinets, traditional routers and switches, or specially equipped hub sites.
