FHLB Dallas and Veritex Community Bank Award $11K Grant to Texas Retiree

Funds Cover Insulation to Protect Homeowner from Extreme Heat

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Thanks to new insulation upgrades, Esperansa Castillo can now enjoy a cooler, more comfortable home during the blistering Texas summer. She received a $10,900 Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) through FHLB Dallas member Veritex Community Bank (Veritex) to install insulation in her home.

“My house was super hot in the summer and super cold in the winter. Financially, I would not have been able to make these changes without the grant.” Esperansa Castillo

Awarded through FHLB Dallas member institutions, SNAP provides grants for the repair and rehabilitation of owner-occupied housing of eligible, special-needs individuals such as homeowners who are elderly or disabled.

“My house was super hot in the summer and super cold in the winter,” Ms. Castillo said. “Financially, I would not have been able to make these changes without the grant.”

Ms. Castillo manages several medical conditions. She lives in her Dallas, Texas, home with her granddaughter, two great grandchildren and two dogs. Now retired, Ms. Castillo worked in various roles at a global technology company for 30 years.

“We are proud to be longstanding members of FHLB Dallas,” said Melanie Goodman, Veritex Community Bank senior vice president and CRA officer. “Together, we’re creating opportunities that strengthen our communities, making support accessible when it’s needed most.”

Since 2012, Veritex has awarded $382,000 in FHLB Dallas SNAP grants.

“Veritex has seen the positive impact this program can provide to people in need, and we value our strong relationship with them,” said Greg Hettrick, senior vice president and Director of Community Investment at FHLB Dallas.

More than $28 million has been awarded to households in FHLB Dallas’ District of Arkansas, New Mexico, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas since SNAP’s 2009 creation.

“I’m very thankful for this program,” said Ms. Castillo. “It’s truly a blessing.”
