Are You Ready to Clean Behind the Couch? Americans List Their Spring Cleaning Targets

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cleaning in spring will be in full swing as 80 percent of Americans plan to engage in the annual deep clean routine in 2025, according to a new survey released by the American Cleaning Institute (ACI).

Among those spring cleaners, nearly half (45%) say they anticipate they’ll clean or organize more than usual this year.

The annual survey, conducted by Wakefield Research, comes on the heels of the worst flu season in 15 years with estimates of more than 29 million cases, according to the CDC. Given the backdrop of a record-high season, it’s not surprising consumers rank effectiveness (39%) as the most important quality in their cleaning products. Effectiveness is followed by price (18%) and the ability to get multiple jobs done (13%). These qualities rank in the top three year-over-year, underscoring Americans want products they can count on.

Spring cleaning is also a time to target areas in the home that tend to be overlooked in daily and weekly cleaning routines. In fact, the top areas Americans plan to tackle include floors/baseboards (80%), behind furniture (76%), storage spaces (75% - garage, attic, basement, shed, closets) and windows (75%).

“Spring cleaning provides a great opportunity to tackle those hard to reach or forgotten places. It’s also the ideal time to get rid of a winter’s worth of dirt and dust,” said Brian Sansoni, ACI Senior Vice President of Communications and Outreach.

“As we tackle those cleaning chores, make sure you’re using the right product the right way for the right task. Read the product label carefully, especially when you’re disinfecting surfaces around the house. Always store cleaning products out of sight and out of the reach of young children.”

About the Survey

The ACI Spring Cleaning Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 1,000 nationally representative U.S. adults ages 18+, between February 10th and February 18th, 2025, using an email invitation and an online survey. The data has been weighted to ensure an accurate representation of nationally representative U.S. adults ages 18+.

Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
