Allonnia’s First Biosolubilization Demo with SGS Boosts Critical Metal Grade

• Recent demonstration at an SGS facility validated success of Allonnia’s biologically generated, recyclable biosolution in continuous process

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Allonnia, a bio-ingenuity company dedicated to extracting value where others see waste, has achieved a major milestone towards commercializing their D-Solve™ process, a bolt-on technology designed to sustainably upgrade mineral concentrates. A recent demonstration at SGS’ metallurgical lab in Lakefield, Ontario using nickel-sulfide concentrate validated the efficacy of Allonnia’s biologically generated solution, or Biosolution, in a continuous process. The Allonnia Biosolution™ is the heart of the D-Solve process which will allow mine sites to increase production onsite, reduce tailings and slag, and dramatically lower CO₂ emissions.

Driven by electrification and the demands of artificial intelligence, demand is soaring for critical materials such as nickel, copper, lithium, and rare earth elements. The mining industry faces increasing challenges to efficiently and sustainably meet these demands from low-grade ores. Allonnia’s innovative D-Solve process addresses these challenges by transforming the traditional mineral processing flowsheet. Harnessing the power of biology, D-Solve removes impurities from mine process operations, boosting production, reducing waste—helping to narrow the supply-demand gap.

During the demonstration at SGS’s facility, Allonnia’s Biosolution achieved a 40% reduction in magnesium impurities from nickel-sulfide concentrate, and a 18% increase in nickel grade, significantly improving nickel recovery. Once the solution is fully implemented across the flowsheet, removal of the impurities is also expected to reduce downstream costs.

The innovation arm of BHP, Think & Act Differently (TAD), supplied the nickel for the trial held at SGS’s facility.
