Alberta Healthcare in Crisis: CUPE Hosts Healthcare Day of Action in Edmonton

EDMONTON, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Alberta healthcare is in crisis. Frontline healthcare workers, CUPE members, and community leaders will gather at Giovanni Caboto Park on September 14, 2024, for the Healthcare Day of Action. This family-friendly event aims to bring attention to the growing crisis in Alberta’s healthcare system, marked by low wages, privatization, and precarious staffing conditions that have deeply impacted workers, patients and residents alike.

The event is part of CUPE Alberta’s Waging Ahead Campaign, which seeks to mobilize workers and allies to demand wage increases that reflect the cost of living and ensure fair treatment for healthcare workers and quality care for Albertans. Alberta’s healthcare system is at a breaking point due to the UCP government’s push for cuts and an American style model of healthcare, which have eroded the quality of care and made it harder to retain experienced staff.

Speakers Include:

  • Sarah Hoffman, NDP MLA and Shadow Health Critic
  • Siobhan Vipond, Canadian Labour Congress (CLC)
  • Chris Gallaway, Executive Director, Friends of Medicare
  • Gil McGowan, President, Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL)
  • Frontline healthcare workers sharing their personal stories from the frontlines of Alberta’s healthcare crisis

Event Details:

  • Location: Giovanni Caboto Park, Edmonton
  • Time: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This is a family-friendly event featuring a BBQ to celebrate the invaluable service of frontline workers in Alberta’s healthcare sector. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear powerful speeches, calling for an end to the move toward an American style healthcare system and rallying support for the upcoming collective bargaining negotiations.

Media Invitation: We encourage media outlets to attend and cover this significant event, as workers and advocates come together to push back against privatization and demand a better future for Alberta’s public healthcare system. Interviews will be available with speakers and healthcare workers.
