Days before possible lockout at Ottawa’s only Francophone women’s shelter, CUPE members rally to support workers

OTTAWA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Community members, workers, and allies from across Ontario will hold a solidarity rally as workers at Ottawa’s only Francophone women’s shelter face a possible lockout. The shelter workers are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 5237. While these workers keep Francophone women and families safe and provide critical support to those who have experienced domestic violence, management is trying to strip part-time workers of benefits and force workers to take on 12-hour shifts that will harm their mental health.

CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn will speak at the rally alongside frontline shelter worker and CUPE 5237 President Karen Francisque. The rally will take place outside of the Ottawa-area office of the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services which is the main funding body for the shelter.
