Dr. Jordan Adair of Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists Earns Board Certification, Becoming the Only Exotic Pet Specialist in Vermont

WILLISTON, Vt.--()--Jordan Adair, DVM, DABVP (Avian) has been certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. As head of the Exotics Department at Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists (BEVS) in Williston, Vermont, Dr. Adair mastered a rigorous and demanding application process and board examination to obtain Diplomate status. He is the only veterinarian in Vermont who has earned this prestigious designation in this field.

To qualify to sit for the extensive, two-day examination, a veterinarian must complete either an AVMA-accredited residency program or six years of clinical veterinary practice. In addition, case reports, references, descriptions of practice procedures, and professional education records must be submitted and pass review. A graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Adair subsequently completed an internship and residency at the NorthCoast Bird and Exotics Specialty Hospital in Ohio.

The Exotics Department at BEVS provides wellness/preventive care, nutrition, advanced diagnostics, medical management, and orthopedic and soft tissue surgery for:

  • Small mammals including rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and all pocket pets
  • All non-venomous reptiles
  • Most avian species including parrots, raptors, poultry, and waterfowl
  • Some small primates, such as marmosets, lemurs, and squirrel monkeys
  • Wildlife (with valid wildlife rehabilitator permit)

They do not treat venomous snakes, most medium to large primates, adult ratites (ostriches, emus, rheas), or any illegally owned animals. BEVS offers exotic patients access to specialized housing, digital X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, endoscopy, in-house laboratory, and pharmacy.

Exotic Care at BEVS is available Monday-Thursday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Same-day appointments are available. Owners who have an exotic pet with an emergency health care issue are urged to call the hospital at 802-863-2387 before coming to the Emergency Department.

The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners was established in 1978. It is one of twenty-two veterinary specialty groups accredited by a special committee of the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, a division of the American Veterinary Medical Association, to recognize excellence in clinical practice through the certification of species-oriented specialists. Only 900 veterinarians worldwide are certified in one of ABVP’s eleven practice categories. For more information, visit abvp.com.
