Northwell Health Pediatric Rheumatologist Recognized for Lifetime Achievement by the American College of Rheumatology

Barbara Anne Eberhard, MD, was named a master recipient of the award for her work and research in pediatric rheumatology.

MANHASSET, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For her dedication to research and leadership in rheumatology, Northwell Health’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) pediatric rheumatologist and Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research scientist Barbara Anne Eberhard, MD, has been awarded top honors by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the Association of Rheumatology Professionals (ARP). Dr. Eberhard was recognized, and named an “ACR Master,” during the ACR Convergence 2023 annual conference which is being held November 10-15 in San Diego, California.

The ACR Master recognition is awarded to physician-researchers who have made significant contributions to the field of rheumatology. Dr. Eberhard spent her two-decade-long career working clinically and as a teacher in pediatric rheumatology in the Department of Pediatrics at CCMC, while also taking on research roles at CCMC and at the Feinstein Institutes. Her focus is on the care of children living with rheumatologic conditions including arthritis, vasculitis, dermatomyositis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

“Children who are living with rheumatologic conditions need special care and people to advocate for research into new therapies that could lead them to live happier, healthier lives,” said Dr. Eberhard. “I am honored to be recognized by the ACR and hope to inspire others to continue the care and advance clinical trials and studies that may benefit our patients.”

Dr. Eberhard also leads the Pediatric Lupus Clinic at Northwell Health, caring for more than 200 patients with pediatric lupus. She was previously past chair of the lupus subcommittee in the Child, Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) from 2008 through 2015. In that role, she helped establish one of the largest clinical databases of pediatric lupus in the world, which now consists of more than 900 patients. Through CARRA, Dr. Eberhard is active in defining consensus treatment guidelines for the use of biologics in other autoimmune diseases and has gathered data demonstrating improved patient outcomes. Her research has led to the publication of 70 papers and over 50 published abstracts. She has been a mentor to more than 20 clinical research fellows and junior faculty, and is a founding member of the ACR/CARRA Mentoring Interest Group (AMIGO) that matches young physician-researchers with mentors from external institutions based on their research and clinical interests.

“Dr. Eberhard is a leader in rheumatology clinical care and research,” said Charles Schleien, MD, MBA, senior vice president and chair of pediatric services at Northwell Health, and the Philip Lanzkowsky Chair and Professor of Pediatrics at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. “This recognition will advance future research and promote collaboration among her peers and colleagues even more, which will in turn benefit patients, which is what this is all about.”
