Cubic’s Umo Platform Modernizes Fare Payment in Sault Ste. Marie

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS), a leader in transportation technology solutions, is proud to work with Sault Ste. Marie Transit in successfully launching Umo in Ontario, Canada. This joint effort brings a new era of fare payment convenience and efficiency to Sault Ste. Marie, enhancing the daily commute for transit riders.

Cubic’s cloud-based Umo platform is designed to enhance the way riders experience and pay for public transportation, making it easier, more convenient and more enjoyable. With Umo, riders now have the option to use contactless payments by simply tapping their reloadable Umo smartcard or using the Umo Mobility app on mobile devices to pay for their fare swiftly and securely.

“One of the most anticipated features of the Umo system is the implementation of smart card bus passes, including automatic digital transfers,” said Brent Lamming, director of community services at the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. “Passengers will enjoy the convenience of purchasing and storing their bus passes digitally. These smart cards, coupled with an intuitive mobile app, will offer a simplified method for accessing transit services, allowing riders to swiftly board buses without the hassle of handling physical tickets.”

Umo's easy-to-deploy contactless payment system will help reduce boarding times, ensuring a smoother and more efficient boarding process. In recognizing the diverse needs of transit riders, Umo’s collaboration with Canadian manufacturer TAG Canada integrates mechanical fareboxes for a complete fare payment solution. This allows passengers who prefer to pay with cash to continue doing so while also alleviating the burden of costly farebox maintenance and operation for the transit agency.

“Cubic Transportation Systems is proud of the partnership with Sault Ste. Marie Transit to improve the transit experience through the convenience and flexibility of Umo,” said Matt Newsome, SVP and GM, Cubic Transportation Systems. “The Umo platform helps enable frictionless, equitable access to transit for all, and we are excited to help bring those benefits to eastern Canada. Whether riders pay their fare with their reloadable smartcard or mobile app, Umo will make paying for public transportation easier.”

Sault Ste. Marie’s collaboration with Umo was made possible thanks to funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) and contributions from the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. Cubic is committed to working with Sault Ste. Marie to deliver an innovative and forward-thinking transit solution that benefits the entire community.
