State and local content increases relevance and improves engagement
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BW Walch, a highly rated publisher of purpose-built instructional materials, is delighted to introduce three top-quality high school math courses that are 100% aligned to the new Georgia Math Standards (GMS) and tailored to meet the specific needs of Georgia students. The newly released courses, ALGEBRA CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS, GEOMETRY CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS, and ADVANCED ALGEBRA CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS, are now available in print and digital formats, as well as on the patent-pending Curriculum Engine.
BW Walch has worked in close collaboration with educational experts, teachers, and administrators to design these courses with a focus on fostering real-world connections, conceptual understanding, statistical reasoning, and equitable learning opportunities. With a wealth of local context integrated into the curriculum, these courses empower students with the tools they need to succeed academically and beyond.
ALGEBRA CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS is the first course in a sequence of three high school math courses with career and college readiness as a focus. The course lays a strong foundation in algebraic and geometric reasoning skills, emphasizing connections between concepts and their real-world applications through modeling. Through a balanced approach that combines conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, students are equipped to solve problems applied to real-life situations. This course focuses on algebraic, quantitative, graphical, and statistical reasoning.
GEOMETRY CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS takes a modeling approach to geometry, trigonometry, algebra, probability, and statistics topics, while providing students with ample opportunities to apply algebraic and geometric reasoning skills. This course is intended to enhance students’ geometric, algebraic, graphical, and reasoning skills.
ADVANCED ALGEBRA CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS prepares students for fourth-level mathematics course options relevant to their postsecondary plans. This course challenges and engages students with a comprehensive exploration of advanced algebraic concepts by encouraging students to delve into complex problem-solving scenarios. This course will further strengthen students’ statistical, functional, and graphical reasoning skills.
Moreover, these courses have been integrated into BW Walch's patent-pending Curriculum Engine, providing educators and students with a seamless and interactive learning experience. The Curriculum Engine offers a range of resources, including multimedia elements, assessments, authentic problem-based tasks, and opportunities to develop deep conceptual understanding, all in support of a personalized learning journey.
“We are thrilled to offer these new high school math courses to students and educators in Georgia,” said Al Noyes, CEO at BW Walch. “ALGEBRA CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS, GEOMETRY CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS, and ADVANCED ALGEBRA CONCEPTS AND CONNECTIONS are designed to instill a deep understanding of mathematics by presenting concepts in a meaningful and relatable way. Our commitment to equity and local context ensures that all students have the opportunity to excel in their math education.”
Educators across Georgia are excited about the potential of these courses to enrich their classroom instruction and improve student outcomes. The integration of real-world connections, balanced instruction, and local context is expected to enhance student engagement and foster a deeper appreciation for the subject.
“We intentionally built these resources with a local context in mind,” said Joanne Whitley, BW Walch’s Senior Director of Mathematics and Professional Development. “In an effort to create culturally relevant and engaging resources, we used common student names for children born in Georgia, along with local landmarks and events in many of the contextual problems. References cross the state, from Lanier to Savannah. These extra connections will help secure students’ interest.”
