ComEd Releases 2022 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Annual Report

Report highlights electric company’s commitment to diversity within the workforce and to powering equity in communities across northern Illinois

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ComEd today released its 2022 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Annual Report: Keeping Up the Momentum. The report highlights the company’s DEI commitment to its 6,300 employees, more than 600 diversity-certified suppliers and the 9 million people it serves in communities throughout northern Illinois. It also outlines ComEd’s plans for continuing to develop a diverse future workforce and address long-standing inequities faced by under-resourced communities as the company invests to modernize the electrical grid and prepares for the demands of clean energy technology.

“Creating an equitable and inclusive workplace means diversity is not only supported, it’s celebrated,” said Gil Quiniones, CEO of ComEd, an Exelon company. “Our DEI commitment goes beyond the 6,300 dedicated professionals who work at ComEd — it guides the way we work with and invest in communities. As we make plans to bring cleaner energy choices to customers, we need to ensure all customers in all communities have equitable access to these opportunities, while continuing to focus on our ultimate duty of delivering reliable and affordable energy.”

The 2022 DEI report provides data about ComEd’s workforce, including the percentages of women, people of color, veterans and people with disabilities across the company and in leadership. It also summarizes ComEd’s near-term plans for investing in communities and ensuring customers continue to receive reliable energy.

Report highlights include:

  • Improved diversity at all levels of the organization compared to 2021, reaching a workforce total of 51 percent diversity (includes women and people of color) and an executive team with 44 percent women and 56 percent people of color.
  • Expanded leadership development programs that invite participation earlier in high-potential, diverse managers’ careers.
  • An array of STEM and workforce development programs that connect students and job seekers to well-paying energy industry jobs and develop a pipeline of diverse talent to build the clean energy workforce of the future.
  • Record spending with diverse suppliers, totaling $963 million or 43 percent of ComEd’s total spending with more than 600 diversity-certified businesses.
  • Record reliability and average monthly residential power bills that were among the lowest in the nation.
  • Infrastructure investments designed to have a significant impact on under-resourced communities — including 55 percent of all capacity expansion projects and 48 percent of all system performance investments for 2023 and 2024.

ComEd’s 2022 DEI accomplishments have earned the company awards and recognitions, including being named by Chicago United as the top company in Chicago for board and executive diversity and earning The Center for Energy Workforce Development’s 2022 Community Partner Award for successful job training and placement programs.

“Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are long-standing values that have been at our core for many years,” said Robert Matthews, Vice President of Talent and Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer for Exelon, ComEd’s parent company. “We are committed to creating and maintaining a work environment where people can bring their authentic selves to work, feel a sense of belonging, and can thrive. We also understand that our commitment to DEI extends beyond our company walls; we continue to show up in and for our communities to ensure that our impact is deep and wide enough to bring about real change.”
