BELLEVUE, Wash.--()--DreamBox Learning, Inc.® (“DreamBox”), pioneer of intelligent adaptive learning, today announced the first-ever statewide student-level analysis of the effectiveness of an education technology program adopted by the state to accelerate student learning. Conducted in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE), the study shows students who completed an average of at least five DreamBox Math lessons per week (about one hour each week) demonstrated higher increases in their 2022 year-end state test scores compared to students in the state who did not use DreamBox. In addition, these gains in achievement were consistently higher regardless of students’ baseline achievement levels from 2021.

“DreamBox positively impacts student outcomes when used with fidelity,” said Matthew Ferguson, Chief Academic Officer for the South Carolina Department of Education. “Given the declines South Carolina saw in math proficiency during the pandemic, this product has been a valuable tool in supporting student academic growth.”

Using individual end-of-year test scores from South Carolina’s statewide assessment, the College and Career Ready Assessment (SC READY), researchers compared spring 2021 scores to spring 2022 scores for more than 77,000 fourth and fifth grade students. The analysis showed students in both grades who completed an average of five or more DreamBox Math lessons per week (about one hour per week) demonstrated average growth that approached or exceeded the South Carolina Added-Value Growth Targets, which represent what the state has determined is necessary for students to accelerate learning each year.

According to the study, fourth and fifth grade students in the state’s lowest, middle, and highest baseline achievement levels who completed five lessons per week (about one hour each week) averaged almost 30 points more growth than students in the same baseline levels who did not complete any DreamBox lessons. The study included disaggregated analyses, which found these same consistently high growth rates regardless of a student’s gender, race, whether a student is an English Language Learner, and other demographic factors.

"We're in a time in education when what matters most is what works," said Jessie Woolley-Wilson, President and CEO of DreamBox Learning. "This study proves that with just one hour of use per week, DreamBox effectively meets students where they are and can accelerate learning for all students. We're looking forward to continuing to partner with the South Carolina Department of Education, and districts across the country, as we deliver remarkable growth through personalized learning experiences that engage students and support teachers."

As the only provider of digital solutions rated “Strong” by Johns Hopkins’ EvidenceforESSA.org in both mathematics and reading, DreamBox is positively impacting student learning for school districts across the country. In addition to this new SCDE study, LearnPlatform recently conducted and published a third-party analysis showing how DreamBox Math improved student achievement in the William Penn School District in Pennsylvania. That analysis, also conducted using data from the 2021-22 school year, found that students in grades K-6 who completed only 3.5 DreamBox Math lessons per week (less than one hour weekly) had significantly higher end-of-year Savvas Math Screener and Diagnostics Assessment scores compared to students who completed fewer than 3.5 DreamBox Math lessons a week.
