Community Members and CUPE Workers Join Striking Early Years Professionals as They Fight for a Fair Deal

TORONTO--()--Allies from around Toronto and across the labour movement will join the picket line of CUPE Local 2484 on Monday for first day of their strike in a solidarity rally. Early years professionals at Selwyn Community Childcare Centre are highly trained and dedicated – yet some earn just $18 an hour, far below their peers in the field and not nearly enough to live in this city. The broad-based support from parents and workers indicates the importance of this fight to raise the floor for this skilled workforce.

SPEAKERS:

Fred Hahn, CUPE Ontario President

Jess Thomas, CUPE Local 2484 Vice President

Andria Babbington, Toronto & York Region Labour Council President

WHEN:

Monday, April 17, 11:30 a.m.

WHERE:

1 Selwyn Avenue, East York

There is no child care without child care workers. This province has made a monumental promise to families that quality, nurturing, professional child care will be available for everyone who wants it. These are the workers who make that happen, who take care of Toronto’s children, and who uplift the next generation of learners,” says Jess Thomas, CUPE Local 2484 Vice President. “If we are going to keep that promise, we need to invest in workers. They deserve better wages, respect, and our support until they get a deal that works for them.”
