Inovia Vein Leads Community Outreach for DVT Awareness Month

PORTLAND, Ore.--()--In recognition of DVT Awareness Month, the Inovia Vein Specialty Centers have launched a community outreach campaign to raise awareness about Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and encourage the public to become more aware of risks and to take preventative measures against this potentially life-threatening condition.

"Deep Vein Thrombosis occurs when blood clots form in the deep veins of the legs or other parts of the body, preventing proper blood flow and causing swelling, pain, and discomfort. If left untreated, DVT can lead to serious complications such as pulmonary embolism and even death," said Dr. Lauren Wikholm, Surgeon, at the Inovia Vein Specialty Centers in Happy Valley, Oregon.

While anyone can develop a DVT there are certain factors that could put you or your loved one at higher risk. These factors include a family history of blood clots, older ages over 60, periods of immobility or an injury to the leg such as a recent surgery.

“One of the often misunderstood issues with DVTs are the long term effects. Many patients who had DVT years ago now suffer with leg swelling, varicose veins and even venous leg ulcers,” said Dr. Randall Todd Jones, a Surgeon at Inovia Vein Specialty Centers in Northwest Portland. "Fortunately, there are a lot of modern and minimally invasive treatment options for patients suffering from post thrombotic complications years after prior DVT.”

If you or someone you know is concerned about a possible DVT, it's important to consider seeking medical advice. With early detection and proper treatment, most cases of DVT can be successfully managed with minimal disruption to your daily life.
