With Sexual Health Awareness Month Underway, Expert Offers Tips to Celebrate, Educate and Inform

BOCA RATON, Fla.--()--To celebrate Sexual Health Awareness Month this September, South Florida based Urologist, men’s health specialist and Man Up podcast co-host Dr. Justin Dubin, is offering tips and advice that aim to help individuals take positive steps toward achieving their own sexual health.

“While sexual health is important year round, this month gives us an extra opportunity to shine a light on the ways in which we can take care of our bodies physically, mentally and emotionally,” said Dubin. “This is such a critical topic that too often falls by the wayside. My hope is to encourage communication, transparency, respect and positivity when it comes to taking control of sexual health and celebrating sexuality.”

Dubin offers the following tips in honor of Sexual Health Awareness Month:

Protection is Paramount: At its core, sexual heath is about protecting your body physically and avoiding things like sexually-transmitted diseases or unplanned pregnancies. In order to do this, it’s critical to think ahead, be safe and have the proper protection in place. I always recommend wearing a condom, and a brand like Trojan has multiple options available, including its new, thinnest latex condom, Trojan Bareskin Raw. I promise that you can still engage in pleasurable sex while wearing a condom and being protected – a win-win for all!

Good Habits Help: When it comes to maintaining and improving your sexual health, the most important thing to remember is: What’s good for your heart is good for your parts. That means that living a good lifestyle, including exercising and eating healthy, will go a long way in ensuring that you have a good sex life for years to come.

Communication is Key: If you are struggling with sexual health issues like a decreased libido or erectile dysfunction, make sure to talk with your doctor. The good news is often times, these issues are solvable. In fact, there are often several potential treatment options based on your sexual health problem. Many people – especially men -- find their sexual health problems embarrassing to talk about, but remember, you can’t get help if you don’t talk about it. Furthermore, it’s critical to communicate with your partner – whether it’s talking about intimacy, sexual pleasure or desires, an open line of communication will build trust, positivity and mutual respect.

Mental Health Matters: A less commonly discussed part of sexual health is mental health. The brain is a powerful thing, and if you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues, your sexual health could be compromised. It’s important to take care of your mental health, as well as your physical health, if you want to maintain good sexual health.

Sexual Health is Total Body Health: For men especially, this means that issues with erections could be an early sign of heart disease or be caused by diabetes. If you are a man who is struggling with sexual health issues, it’s important to go to your doctor to not only treat the problem, but also get assessed for potential other health issues. Seeing your doctor can prevent bigger problems down the road.

“I hope that we can continue conversations about sexual health far beyond just this month,” said Dubin. “Having a better understanding of your body, as well as acknowledging that sexuality is part of the human experience – are great steps to ensuring that this happens.”
