September is National Cholesterol Education Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of understanding and controlling cholesterol levels. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are the top, most prevalent risk factors for heart disease that touch 68% of the U.S. population combined. Similar to high blood pressure, high cholesterol has no symptoms, so many people don’t know that their cholesterol is too high. According to the CDC, nearly 86 million U.S. adults could benefit from taking medicine to manage their high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, but only about half are doing so, likely because they don’t have symptoms.
