HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Church and School, a traditional Episcopal church in the Diocese of Texas that supports the Christian, classical college preparatory school, today announced “Sounds of Scotland,” a one-night, live celebration of the Scottish arts by Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School’s award-winning bagpipers, drummers and Highland dancers. “Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School’s world-renowned Scottish Arts program is a long-held school tradition, which has personally enriched my life and the lives of many students over the years,” said Mike Cusack, Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School Headmaster, Former Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Pipe Band Director, and World Champion Piper. “It is our honor to showcase our talents and proudly celebrate and share our Scottish heritage at ‘Sounds of Scotland.’ We are looking forward to another outstanding performance and hope many Houstonians come out to support these hard-working and talented student performers.”
Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School’s Scottish Arts Program is unique in Houston and has been part of the school’s heritage since its founding in the 1950s. Today’s program carries on the program’s tradition, discipline, and prestige.
With nearly 20% of the student body participating, students begin learning to play the bagpipes and drums in the fourth grade. As they progress through three levels they perform regularly at campus events culminating in the World Pipe Band Championships.
Highland Dance is part of the school’s curriculum starting in Lower School and is an elective in Middle and Upper School where students have the opportunity to join the competitive team. More than 23 Saint Thomas’ Episcopal dancers are U.S. champions. On seven separate occasions, Saint Thomas’ Episcopal dancers have finished in the top six at the World Championships held in Scotland, and in 1997, an accomplished Saint Thomas’ Episcopal dancer won the Juvenile World Championships.

Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Church began in May 1953 when 22 families gathered in an abandoned television studio on Post Oak Road in what was then the far southwest corner of Houston. A spirit of providing for themselves and for others fueled the growth of the church and its primary mission: Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School.
