Press Ganey Appoints Kerry Johnson as Senior Advisor to Strategic Consulting

Johnson will guide high-reliability work with clients

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Press Ganey today announced the appointment of Kerry Johnson as a senior advisor in its Strategic Consulting group. Johnson comes to Press Ganey with more than 35 years of experience improving reliability and preventing safety events in nuclear power, transportation, manufacturing and healthcare.

As a leader on Press Ganey’s consulting team, Johnson will provide guidance on the development of high reliability strategy, curriculum, next level solutions and frameworks. He will also participate in Press Ganey’s value-added high reliability learning series and Safety 2025 Initiative, a collective commitment to reducing preventable harm and making health systems safer for both patients and caregivers.

“Having Kerry involved once again in a strategic role in our organization is a game changer for us in many ways,” said Charles Hagood, president of strategic consulting, Press Ganey. “As one of the foremost thought leaders in high reliability, and the architect of much of Press Ganey’s current framework, his strategic insights will be instrumental as we help our clients achieve next-level performance.”

Johnson was founding partner and chief innovation officer of HPI Consulting where he specialized in designing and implementing human performance reliability programs for large organizations, resulting in dramatically reduced event rates. Following the acquisition of HPI by Press Ganey in 2015, Johnson transitioned into the role of partner in Press Ganey’s Strategic Consulting group before retiring in 2017. During his tenure, healthcare clients achieved up to a 91% reduction in preventable serious safety events in an average of just three years using his methods, still in use today by Press Ganey’s consulting team.

Johnson’s background includes root cause analysis for nuclear power events and the Texas A&M bonfire structure collapse, reliability improvement for the U.S. Department of Energy nuclear incident response and manufacturing production at Colorado Fuel & Iron. He has empowered safety culture improvements for more than half the nuclear power plants in the United States.

Prior to forming HPI, Johnson was the chief operating officer of Performance Improvement International, technical advisor & assistant engineering manager for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, and assistant chief test engineer at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

“I am so excited to be working again towards Zero Harm with our healthcare clients and the Press Ganey team,” said Johnson. “Helping hospitals improve patient safety was the most rewarding professional experience of my life, and I look forward to reuniting with the nation’s top-performing health systems as they set out to improve the patient experience.”

Johnson holds a Master of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics.
