O’Reilly Announces 500 Recipients of Its New Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship Program, Supporting the Next Generation of Technology Talent

Members of Underrepresented Groups in Technology Will Gain Access to Content, Certifications, and Mentorship Opportunities through Access to O’Reilly

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--O’Reilly, the premier source for insight-driven learning on technology and business, today announced the recipients of its new diversity and inclusion scholarship program. The initiative, which awards 500 individuals a free membership to the O’Reilly learning platform for one year, will help members of underrepresented groups stay ahead of today’s most important technology trends. With interest from more than 4,600 applicants, it’s clear that the time is now for greater support and encouragement for people from a range of backgrounds, ages, and career expertise within the technology community.

Through access to a wide range of content, learning modalities, certifications, and mentorship opportunities within the platform, scholarship recipients can leverage the tools and resources they need to build important technical skills and accelerate their careers. They’ll also be guided through a speaker series to introduce them to the topics and content most pertinent for today's technology professionals. With more to be added throughout the year, current speakers and subjects include:

  • July: Working in Technology Today and the Opportunities of Tomorrow | Laura Baldwin, President of O’Reilly
  • August: Succeeding with a Career in Technology | Venkat Subramaniam, Award-winning Author, Founder of Agile Developer Inc., and Instructional Professor at the University of Houston

The diversity and inclusion scholarship program is part of a broader set of goals O’Reilly set forth in January 2021 to create a culture more inclusive of all genders, races, ethnicities, religious views, sexual orientations, ages, and abilities, with the goal of increasing the number of experts and new hires who identify as members of an underrepresented community to 40%. This commitment has enabled O’Reilly to increase the visibility of people from underrepresented groups in its speakers, authors, and instructors on the platform to 40.9% in just six months. On average, 50% of speakers at O’Reilly’s 2021 Superstream events and 32.6% of new hires YTD identify as members of underrepresented groups.

“We’ve made big strides this year to change the face of O’Reilly to be more representative of the diverse, but often underrepresented, technical talent bringing innovative and cutting-edge content to our learning platform and to our company,” said Laura Baldwin, president of O’Reilly. “Our scholarship program is reflective of this, and we are honored to welcome the next generation of learners to the O’Reilly family and provide them with the tools they need to make a real difference in the world.”
