Frost & Sullivan Presents MIC with Product Leader Award for Best Practices in Virtual Critical Care

Research firm notes strong differentiators from competitors in healthcare’s virtual care space

HOUSTON--()--Frost & Sullivan, a leading research and consulting firm that helps its clients accelerate growth, has awarded Medical Informatics Corp. (MIC) for Best Practices in Product Leadership for the Virtual Critical Care industry. The award was made in connection with Frost & Sullivan’s ongoing effort to identify and evaluate growth opportunities across multiple industries, technologies and regions of the world. MIC was highlighted for its FDA-cleared platform, Sickbay™.

“MIC’s Sickbay platform is unique in the industry based on the flexibility and customization it offers to health systems that can build the solution on top of their existing infrastructure, without disturbing workflows, and can incorporate custom modules based on clinical and research requirements,” noted Kaustubh Savant, senior industry analyst with Frost & Sullivan.

When compared to competing solutions on the market, Sickbay was noted for strong differentiation across multiple factors, including the platform’s vendor-agnostic capability to view up to 100 patients across units and facilities. The platform also differentiated itself with its ability to facilitate deployment of virtual care and AI into other inpatient settings outside of the ICU, for its alarm management applications, and for its apps and open APIs to develop and deploy near-real-time predictive analytics. Additional recognitions included low up-front investment cost, superior customization, scale-up speed, and SaaS model to support enabling evolving applications to be deployed on a single architecture.

Analysts from Frost & Sullivan also noted that because access to time-aligned, synchronized waveform data at scale is a foundational requirement for the future of virtual care and patient-centered AI, Sickbay’s unique ability to empower clinicians makes it a leader in the industry and an advantage to healthcare delivery.

“While it’s tremendously rewarding to be able to acknowledge the hard work of our innovative design thinkers, our engineering team and the other experts here at MIC, the true value for our company is that we have built something that allows heroes in healthcare to advance the standard of care,” said Emma Fauss, co-founder and CEO of MIC. “This opportunity to utilize patients’ own data to improve their care, and then facilitate the kind of research that data-driven medicine enables, is truly the reason and the mission that inspires the team at MIC every day.”

As Frost & Sullivan analysts noted in the report, a large number of hospitals are using diverse platforms to manage their critical/acute care needs including alarm management software and clinical decision support. These fragmented solutions have resulted in excessive overall spending by U.S. healthcare systems trying to keep up with the costs of licensing, implementing and maintaining a disparate architecture. MIC’s Sickbay solves this major solution fragmentation problem by providing:

  • One platform
  • One point of integration
  • One implementation charge
  • Web-based app that can be added at any time
  • Unlimited number of medical devices featuring time series integration
  • Per bed pricing with unlimited users
  • Open APIs to empower hospitals to create their own clinical, operational, or patient-specific analytics

Sickbay is easily integrated with multiple devices and is customizable to a hospital’s existing infrastructure. Also, the solution’s intuitive, web-based user interface allows for ease in staff training, remote monitoring from any location, and expediting collaborations in care.

A final advantage noted in the report included MIC’s strategic alliances with Intel, Dell and Cisco as a key differentiator from other competitors in the virtual care industry. Key technological advancements include the fact that the Sickbay platform:

  • Runs on Intel technologies, including Xeon Scalable processors with Intel Deep Learning Boost for built-in AI acceleration, storage solutions such as Optane, and Intel-optimized python libraries to accelerate machine learning and artificial intelligence research for physiologic waveform and other time-series data sets
  • Is validated on the latest server hardware from Dell, as well as long-term storage solutions such as Isilon and PowerStore
  • Leverages the existing Cisco networking architecture at hospitals for medical device integration, eliminating the need for expensive, computer hardware to be installed and maintained at the bedside

MIC and Intel have extended this program through 2021 so that hospitals and health systems not only have the virtual care solution needed for short-term needs of pandemic waves, but also create the ability to pilot and test the SaaS model as an alternative and create the foundational architecture needed to support the future of data-driven medicine at scale.
