ENR Rankings Show Black & Veatch as Leader of Infrastructure Convergence

Strong showings in power, water and telecommunications rankings reflect company’s stature in critical infrastructure sectors

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Black & Veatch announces it once again has ranked as a leader in the power, telecommunications, water and sewer and waste space. The engineering, construction and procurement (EPC) company placed highly in four categories of the Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) just-released “Top 500 Design Firms” Sourcebook, reflecting the company’s strong position with clients pursuing decarbonization, sustainability and resilience programs.

ENR’s rankings are based on revenue from the company’s global operations. The Top 500 Design Firms Sourcebook ranked Black & Veatch’s power business No. 2 for the sixth consecutive year. Black & Veatch also secured a No. 2 ranking for telecommunications, No. 7 for water and No. 8 for sewer and waste, cementing the company’s standing as a global infrastructure solutions expert.

This recognition comes as Black & Veatch undertakes an aggressive transformation in how it provides services to an increasingly diverse client base, which ranges from Fortune 100 companies to local, state and national governments. Last November, the company announced it was strengthening its sustainability vision through sweeping pledges addressing environmental and business practices, including its own carbon neutrality by 2025. It separately declared an end to its participation in coal-based power design and construction, focusing instead on clean energy technologies and helping clients accelerate their path to net zero.

“Sustainability, reliability and resilience initiatives are driving the engineering and construction sectors to rapidly evolve and focus on the integrated solutions that will achieve these goals,” said Steve Edwards, CEO of Black & Veatch. “The ENR rankings reflect our deep experience across diverse sectors and ongoing efforts to add value along every step of the infrastructure lifecycle for our clients.”

Black & Veatch continues to drive innovation across critical infrastructure markets:

  • With alternative fuels offering new solutions for a carbon-free future, the Intermountain Power Agency chose Black & Veatch as owner’s engineer on its Intermountain Power Project Renewal Project, one of the earliest installations of combustion turbine technology designed to use a high percentage of green hydrogen.
  • The Black & Veatch designed, award-winning Blacksnake Creek Stormwater Separation Project, a key piece of the combined sewer overflow (CSO) long-term control plan for the city of St. Joseph, Missouri, was completed in June 2020. The project improves Missouri River water quality by reducing the amount of CSOs annually. The project featured seven separate bid packages.
  • As a market-leading designer and builder of high-speed fiber networks, Black & Veatch last year was chosen by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) to provide engineering, permitting, procurement and construction of a new fiber optic network along 220 miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The network will boost connectivity between PTC’s administrative buildings while supporting all-electronic tolling and intelligent transportation systems for enhanced safety and mobility, and it will prepare the turnpike to support emerging technologies for smart roadways and connected and autonomous vehicles.
  • With Black & Veatch as program manager, Ohio’s Long Ridge Energy Generation is retrofitting its 485-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle power plant to run on a blend of natural gas and carbon-free hydrogen, making it the nation’s first large gas turbine plant to transition operations to hydrogen fuel.
  • Black & Veatch and Schneider Electric recently completed a microgrid system they jointly designed and built for the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar, in San Diego, California. The microgrid has been proven to provide 100 percent capability – even in the event of power outages – across the facility’s more than 100 mission-critical buildings, including its entire flight line.
  • Outstanding performance during one of the most challenging years in recent history made Black & Veatch’s Management Consulting business Inframation and SparkSpread’s top technical advisor by deal count for 2020.

Editor’s Notes:

  • In January 2021, as further evidence of the company’s commitment to decarbonization and the development of a more balanced energy portfolio, Black & Veatch joined the Hydrogen Council – a global initiative of leading energy, transport and industry organizations with a vision for hydrogen’s ability to foster the energy transition.
