Car Rally in Support of Long Term Care Workers at Wynn Park Villa to Take Place in Truro on Friday, March 5

TRURO, Nova Scotia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Join friends and allies of staff at Wynn Park Villa nursing home in Truro for a car rally in support of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Tevin Crawford, who was recently fired from his job.

Wynn Park Villa is a privately-owned nursing home where staff are frustrated by workplace health and safety issues, scheduling, sick leave, vacation time and staff shortages. Some workers are now being intimidated or punished for speaking out about these issues.

Under both federal and provincial law, the right of an employee to join a union is guaranteed. It follows that employers are not permitted to engage in anti-union animus, which includes intimidating or retaliating against workers for joining or wanting to join a union.

Car rally in support of Tevin Crawford and long term care workers at Wynn Park Villa

Friday, March 5, from 12 to 12:30 p.m.

Where:

Starting on public road near Wynn Park Villa on Windsor Way.

Car route: make a circular loop of Windsor Way, right onto Winchester Place, left onto Wellington Court, left onto Lower Truro Road, and left again onto Windsor Way.

Speakers at the rally will include CUPE NS President Nan McFadgen, NS Federation of Labour President Danny Cavanagh, and NS Nurses’ Union President Janet Hazelton.

“We know one thing for sure about high quality care in nursing homes. The quality of care for residents is related to the working conditions of staff,” says CUPE Atlantic Organizer Govind Rao. “The smart move would be for Ms. Peck to show respect for Nova Scotia law and the remaining employees by addressing their concerns and returning Mr. Crawford to the work he loves and does so well.”

CUPE represents the largest number of workers in Nova Scotia’s long term care sector, with more than 4,000 members at 49 nursing homes.
