Based on an analysis of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) Supplemental Health Care Exhibit (SHCE), MFA analyzed the profitability of both health insurance segments in 2019.
- Profitability in the Individual segment showed an aggregate underwriting gain of $4.2 billion, with approximately 67.6% of plans reporting underwriting gains in 2019.
- Small Group segment continued to experience profitability growth in 2019, marking four years of increasing underwriting gains.
- Declines in individual and group health insurance enrollment continued in 2019.
