“Aside from the strong clinical expertise that Spong brings to Contemporary OB/GYN®, her experiences also provide a unique set of perspectives on broad aspects of the OB-GYN practice,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences, the parent company of Contemporary OB/GYN®. “As we continue to enhance our content portfolio for our readers, we are excited to welcome Spong and carry out her initiative to provide clear, concise, plain-language insight on topics confronted by OB-GYNs in day-to-day practice.”

Spong is a professor and vice chair in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she also serves as the chief of the department’s division of maternal-fetal medicine. Spong specializes in prematurity, fetal complications and improving outcomes in children. Her clinical responsibilities are in the Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas. She holds the Gillette professorship of obstetrics and gynecology.

“While Spong’s professional focus lies in the field of obstetrics, her vision for Contemporary OB/GYN® goes well beyond that aspect of female care,” said Aviva Belsky, group publisher of Contemporary OB/GYN®. “In catering our content to the current learners of the specialty, we hope to address the topical issues faced by experts in the field and expand our venues for information dissemination.”

Spong’s all-encompassing research interests include the developing fetus, improving the understanding of stillbirth, fetal surgery for myelomeningocele, Zika in pregnancy and the human placenta. She holds several patents for neuroprotective agents that help prevent fetal injury. Spong is also a passionate advocate for inclusion in research for underrepresented groups.
