Intertek Completes First Round of Testing to National Institute of Justice Standard 1001.00, Under the Safety Equipment Institute Certification Program in U.S.

CORTLAND, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Intertek, a Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has completed its initial testing under the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) certification program for U.S. National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Standard 1001.00. The SEI program is the first, and only, recognized program for the standard, which entered the private sector in December of 2018. As SEI’s sole testing partner, Intertek is the first laboratory to test products for certification under the new private-sector program.

NIJ Standard 1001.00 specifies minimum requirements for form and fit, performance, testing, documentation, and labeling of restraints intended to be used by criminal justice personnel. Certification indicates that certain samples of restraint products have been tested and found to meet requirements for corrosion, tensile strength, decontamination solution resistance, impact, component strength, and key and cuff design attributes, among others. Additionally, the facilities where products are manufactured have been audited and found to meet stringent quality assurance requirements. Certification to the standard, drafted by Intertek experts and others within the industry, recently transitioned from within the NIJ to the private sector.
