  • Green Initiative has already diverted 33,000 pounds of electronic equipment waste from landfills and reduced greenhouse gasses from the reuse of equipment by 60%.

BERKELEY, Calif.--()--Medinas, a technology-driven asset management company for hospitals, today announced the launch of the Medinas Green Initiative, a two-pronged program designed to both improve the company’s corporate sustainability and enhance the environmental benefits of the Medinas platform for its users. The program will be led by new hire Daniel Brian, who joins Medinas as the General Counsel, Director of Operations, and Environmental Program Lead.

The Green Initiative

The healthcare industry accumulates billions of dollars in waste per year due to an inefficient equipment supply chain. In fact, over 59% of a hospital’s carbon footprint is the result of asset procurement. Incorrectly tracked and assessed equipment may result in hospitals buying more equipment than they need or disposing of equipment before the end of its useful life, resulting in unnecessary money spent and the harmful environmental impact of equipment manufacturing.

Medinas, which is certified Platinum by the Green Business Bureau, works to reduce this waste by providing a resale platform for used medical equipment.

“Environmental sustainability and corporate stewardship are directly aligned with the vision I had when starting Medinas,” said Chloe Alpert, Medinas co-founder and CEO. “With this new initiative, Medinas is putting environmental sustainability at the forefront with the goal of bringing environmental awareness to the rest of the secondary market, in hopes that others in the market will see how simple it is to be sustainable.”

In a hospital pilot study for the new Green Initiative, over 33,000 pounds of electronic equipment waste was diverted from landfills, with more than 96% of that waste containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium. One quarter of the waste also contained radioactive materials. Beyond the landfill, Medinas users buying used medical equipment from pilot hospitals saw an over 60% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions as compared to purchasing new equipment.

Daniel Brian Joins Medinas

To lead the environmental initiative, Daniel Brian is joining Medinas as its General Counsel and Director of Operations. After graduating with honors from Columbia Law School, Daniel started his legal career at the top-ranked environmental law firm in the country, Beveridge & Diamond. There, he specialized in corporate sustainability, general corporate law and real estate transactional work focused on urban redevelopment. He comes to Medinas after co-founding the nationally acclaimed coworking brand Covo.

In his hybrid role, Daniel helps Medinas navigate the many challenges of operating an agile startup within the rigid confines of the healthcare industry. He is also preparing Medinas for rapid growth by systematizing and streamlining Medinas’s real-world operations to maximize efficiency and replicability of processes. Finally, Brian is stewarding the environmental strategic direction of the company, negotiating partnerships with environmental organizations and optimizing Medinas’s supply chain and operations to minimize environmental impacts.

“I joined Medinas because they are poised to bring sweeping, much-needed change to the healthcare sector,” said Brian. “It is a unique opportunity to use my environmental background to help hospitals shrink their carbon footprint.”
