“This year we have a lot to celebrate! We introduced a bylaws amendment at the 2019 California Democratic Convention (CADEM) in San Francisco to extend California Democratic Party membership to all, to non-citizens and regardless of immigration status,” said Sarah Souza, President of SFLDC. “As a result, the California Democratic Party has amended its bylaws to allow all Californians to have a seat at the table.”

Souza was the first-ever Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient to be appointed to the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee (DCCC).

“SFLDC is leading the movement to empower our voices and is actively introducing resolutions for CADEM as a response to the current political climate,” added Souza.

Overall, SFLDC is shaping California’s politics through its actions and resolutions.

Accomplishments include:

  • SFLDC led efforts to pass SB288, a bill to amend the CA Election Code to allow Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and green card holders to run for Central County Committees. The bill inspired many Dreamers across the state to become civically engaged. Although the bill has not been voted on by the state legislature, it has created a momentum to make California’s political system more inclusive and diverse.
  • Resolution 19-08.13: “Encouraging 2020 US Presidential Candidates to Prioritize Humane Immigration Reform in their First 100 Days Plan.” The resolution was passed during the Aug. 25, 2019, California Democratic Party (CDP) Executive Board meeting in San Jose.
Author and Lead: Victoria Sanchez De Alba, SFLDC’s VP of Communications and Assembly Delegate (AD) District 22 in San Mateo County with Dan Stegink, AD 22; and Gabriel Medina, SFLDC VP of Political Affairs and AD 19 in San Francisco.
  • Resolution 19-05.49: “Against Citizenship Questions on US Census,” one of just 14 approved of 200 that were submitted at the June 2019 CADEM Convention.
Author: Victoria Sanchez De Alba, SFLDC’ VP of Communications and AD 22; Dan Stegink, AD 22.
  • SFLDC’s leadership in advancing immigrant rights led the state legislature to pass SB225 which reads in part: “The bill will provide that a person, regardless of citizenship or immigration status, is eligible to hold an appointed civil office if the person is 18 years of age and a resident of the state.” The legislation has been signed by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Author: CA Senator Maria Elena Durazo
