Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine Students Recognized for Dedication to One Health

Student efforts honored by the One Health Commission

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts--()--One Health, the intersection between animal, human and environmental well-being, is a key component to education and research at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM). In recognition of that dedication, the One Health Commission has announced RUSVM as one of two institutions globally to win its competition for One Health Day student projects in 2018. This recognition includes a $2,000 award, which RUSVM will utilize for its One Health Day events in fall of 2019.

One Health Day was officially launched in 2016 by the One Health Commission, the One Health Initiative and the One Health Platform Foundation, and draws attention to the urgent need of resolving today’s critical global health challenges through a trans-disciplinary approach. Students and professionals from around the world host various events to promote the cause. The 2018 One Health Day generated nearly 120 events in more than 30 countries.

Students from RUSVM and other schools, including RUSVM’s sister institution, Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM), organized a week-long series of workshops, lectures and special events to commemorate One Health Day on November 3, 2018.

RUSVM’s One Health Week began with a faculty-led round table discussion of One Health. Additionally, students displayed 40 posters highlighting the diverse array of research taking place in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. The week culminated with a Community Fair where medics, veterinarians, environmentalists, governmental representatives and local partners joined forces to promote One Health awareness.

“We are proud of our students’ hard work hosting events and activities for One Health Day and the recognition they earned. Our students are proud to help educate the community on the connection between animal, human and environmental health,” said Dr. Sean Callanan, Ph.D., MVB, MRCVS, CertVR, DipECVP, FRCPath, dean of RUSVM.

One Health is a movement to integrate and collaborate on a holistic approach to solving zoonotic infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, food safety and other problems we encounter in our world. Today, One Health initiatives are being supported by global organizations including RUSVM’s parent company, Adtalem Global Education, the World Medical Association (WMA), the World Veterinary Association (WVA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
