More than 25% of Healthcare Organizations Rate Cybersecurity as Their Greatest Concern

Organizations look to internal audit to help mitigate cyber risks

CHICAGO--()--A flash poll conducted by Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly) indicates 26% of respondents view cybersecurity as the emerging risk of most concern to their healthcare organization.

“Today’s healthcare environment is heavily reliant on technology. The risk that dependence poses to healthcare organizations and their daily operations is significant,” Deb Bowes, partner in Baker Tilly’s healthcare practice, said. “A data breach can be catastrophic to a healthcare provider.”

“A strategic internal audit program can not only provide an organization with assurance and help prevent fraud, it can help mitigate a myriad of other risks,” Mark Laccetti, partner in Baker Tilly’s risk, internal audit and cybersecurity practice, said. “Healthcare organizations understanding and prioritizing risks will allow them to align mitigation strategies with the audit plan to proactively safeguard information and systems.”

Baker Tilly recently held an educational webinar, “Managing healthcare risks through internal audit,” providing insight into how internal audit can be leveraged to manage risk and compliance at healthcare organizations.

The webinar presenters discussed:

  • How an internal audit function can be valuable to a healthcare organization
  • The difference between the internal, outsourced and co-sourced options for engaging an internal audit
  • The risk assessment process
