Computational Intelligence Engine Wolfram|Alpha Announces New Integration with Amazon Alexa

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.--()--Alexa, who went to the Super Bowl last year? Alexa, what’s the GDP per capita of states in the Midwest? Thanks to a recently announced relationship with the computational knowledge engine Wolfram|Alpha, Amazon’s smart assistant Alexa just got smarter and can now provide accurately computed answers to these questions and more.

Since its launch in 2009, Wolfram|Alpha has provided detailed answers to a broad range of questions, from the arts and pop culture to calculus and statistics, through its website and mobile app—and later through Apple’s smart assistant Siri. As opposed to traditional search engines, Wolfram|Alpha computes factual answers from curated data rather than providing links to unverified information. This new integration with Alexa harnesses the computational intelligence of Wolfram|Alpha and is now available to Amazon customers in the United States.

"Our long-term goal has always been to make all systematic knowledge accessible to everyone. Integrating Wolfram|Alpha’s computable knowledge and capabilities with Alexa is one more step in that direction,” said Alan Joyce, Director of Content Development for Wolfram|Alpha.

By sourcing answers from Wolfram|Alpha, Alexa greatly enhances its ability to provide users with factual information about history, economics, geography, math and astronomy—all computed on the fly. Some questions Alexa can now answer through Wolfram|Alpha include:

Alexa, how many cups does twelve tablespoons make?
Alexa, who were the actors in Married With Children?
Alexa, is a parallelogram a regular polygon?
Alexa, how far is the Voyager 1 satellite from Earth?
Alexa, how big is an elephant when it’s born?

Whether individuals are querying Alexa with regard to challenging mathematical problems for homework, biographical information about notable individuals throughout history or specific stock exchange price comparisons, Alexa can now provide intelligent answers to a broader range of questions due to integration with Wolfram|Alpha.
