FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pests are often thought of as a warm weather issue, but the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is reminding homeowners that Old Man Winter brings with it a slew of potential pest problems. When the temperature drops, cockroaches, ants, mice, rats and other common invaders look for a warm place that has easy access to food and water to nest during the winter – and homes are often where they hunker down.
“With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, prepping and pest-proofing the home for winter may be pretty far down on the to-do list,” noted Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. “But all signs are pointing to another heavy pest season, so it is important that homeowners make it a priority to ensure they are not offering an open invitation to pests and rodents. A few simple chores around the house will go a long way in preventing an infestation.”
Homeowners are encouraged to follow these winter pest-proofing tips recommended by NPMA experts:
- Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home using caulk or steel wool.
- Replace loose mortar and worn weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
- Screen vents to chimneys and repair damaged screens.
- Maintain well-organized storage areas, placing items in sealed plastic bins off of the floor.
- Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home on a raised structure.
- Keep branches and shrubbery trimmed away from the home.
“Despite homeowners’ best prevention efforts, pests may still find a way inside the home. If an infestation is suspected, contact a licensed pest professional for assistance,” added Mannes.
