GREENWOOD, Ind.--()--Pitney Bowes (NYSE: PBI), a global technology company that provides commerce solutions in the areas of shipping and mailing, data, and ecommerce, today announced the opening of a new 450,000 square foot Fulfillment, Delivery and Returns Super Center in Greenwood, Indiana. City and state officials, along with more than 100 employees joined Marc Lautenbach, President and CEO, Pitney Bowes to commemorate the opening.

“As demand for our Ecommerce services and solutions grows, the need to expand our distribution operations is clear,” said Marc Lautenbach, President and CEO, Pitney Bowes. “The Pitney Bowes Super Center establishes a new standard for technological advancement in fulfillment, delivery and returns automation, so we can more quickly and efficiently service our clients throughout the United States. Once packages leave our dock doors, they are efficiently routed through our distribution networks to their final destinations in partnership with the USPS®. This Super Center is unique in its ability to facilitate the entire ecommerce process – from order, to fulfillment, to delivery and returns – all under one roof.”

The Super Center will leverage cutting-edge technology, including automated parcel sortation equipment and fulfillment solutions powered by robotics to efficiently fulfill ecommerce orders, enable deliveries, and process returns for consumers and ecommerce retailers. Still in the final phases of construction, the Super Center includes a production floor that is three football fields in length, 80 dock doors, and parking space for 144 trailers. At full capacity, it can process up to 44,000 parcels per hour and pick and pack over 34,000 products per day. Pitney Bowes plans to grow its presence to more than 300 full-time employees in the coming year.

The Super Center features new fulfillment automation technology powered by 63 small robots on wheels that perform automated put-away and picking from over 29,000 bins stacked in a metal cube with a 10,000 square foot footprint.

Parcel delivery and returns services will be powered by an automated parcel sorter in a custom four-sorter configuration designed to allow faster routing. It includes floor loading conveyors, high-volume sortation conveyors and outputs to Gaylord boxes or carts.

The Super Center will also feature Pitney Bowes’ new Complete Returns solution, an offering from the Pitney Bowes Commerce Complete platform. Starting with its proven industry-leading SmartLabel technology, Complete Returns allows Pitney Bowes to facilitate all aspects of the retail returns process, including returns dispositioning, opening returned parcels, refurbishing contents if necessary, verifying that contents can be resold, and then placing the items back into inventory to make them available for the next order. The entire process can be managed on site, saving retailers time and cost, versus returning the product to a regional distribution center. It also allows consumers to receive faster exchanges and refunds.

The State of Indiana and Pitney Bowes

The Super Center’s Greenwood, Indiana location gives Pitney Bowes a foothold in the Midwest’s growing ecommerce market, as well as access to a large and growing labor market, and transportation lanes that reach clients and partners throughout the United States.

“Greenwood is the ideal place for our new state-of-the-art Fulfillment, Delivery and Returns Super Center given its skilled workforce and geographic location,” Lautenbach added. “We're excited about expanding our operations in Indiana and look forward to being a member of this community for years to come.”

Pitney Bowes has had a longstanding relationship with the State of Indiana. In addition to its Greenwood facility, the company operates its North American Supply Chain Headquarters out of Whitestown and processes more than 1.5 billion pieces of letter mail annually at its Presort Services Operating Center in Indianapolis. The company also operates a smaller parcel services operation in Fishers, which it is in the process of relocating to the Greenwood facility. In all, Pitney Bowes employees more than 500 Hoosiers.
