HOUSTON--()--Whether it’s improving outdoor green spaces in urban areas, helping local farmers preserve their land or saving native wildlife, one thing is certain: Texans are passionate about supporting their communities and making the Lone Star State the best place to live and work. Reliant’s EcoShare program is a great example of that commitment with support from customers achieving donations to EarthShare of Texas surpassing the $1 million mark.

Established in 2011, Reliant’s EcoShare program supports nonprofits across the state focused on building healthy and sustainable environments. Participation in EcoShare can be added to any Reliant electricity plan and consists of small monthly payments from enrolled customers that are used toward donations to EarthShare of Texas and the purchase of carbon offsets. To date, the program has now provided more than $1.2 million for EarthShare of Texas and over 558,000 metric tons of carbon have been avoided, which is like planting more than 146,000 trees.

“We created the EcoShare program to give our customers across the state a simple way to support organizations that work to keep Texas beautiful and improve the quality of life in our communities,” said Elizabeth Killinger, president, Reliant. “And in true Reliant fashion, our employees celebrated the milestone by volunteering with Buffalo Bayou Partnership, one of the many deserving EarthShare of Texas nonprofit partners, to help maintain landscaping at Buffalo Bayou Park.”

More than 40 of the most respected environmental and conversation organizations across the state are members of EarthShare of Texas, such as Buffalo Bayou Partnership and Katy Prairie Conservancy to Blackland Prairie Raptor Center and Keep Texas Beautiful. All organizations that make up EarthShare of Texas are committed to ensuring our communities are protected for future generations.

“Reliant’s EcoShare program proves that small donations over time can collectively make a big impact,” said Janet Maykus, executive director, EarthShare of Texas. “We are grateful for our continued partnership with Reliant and thank their generous Texas customers who share our mission to protect our state’s resources.”

New and existing Reliant customers can join the EcoShare program, choosing one of two options: EcoShare Gold, for $5.95 per month, includes a $2 donation to EarthShare of Texas and 1,000 pounds of carbon offsets; and EcoShare Silver, for $3.95 per month, includes a $1 donation to EarthShare of Texas and 500 pounds of carbon offsets. In addition to the program support from customers, Reliant makes an annual corporate contribution to support EarthShare of Texas.
