PORTLAND, Ore.--()--Randall Rene, a Comcast employee for 18 years, has been named Big Brother of the Year by the Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest. Rene overcame a childhood of abuse and neglect with the help of mentors. Now he gives back by mentoring Henry — his “Little Brother” — to make sure the young man has the support and encouragement he needs to succeed.

Beach Pace, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters presented the award to Rene at a ceremony on June 22 at the Moda Center. Pace says Rene was selected for the award due to the commitment he’s made to Henry, who was in attendance for the award presentation. “The growth that Randall has been able to foster in Henry has been tremendous,” Pace said.

“I came from a family that was pretty tough,” said Rene. “But I had some great mentors as a child, and I know I would not have graduated without those people to show me love and guidance.” Rene has been a Big Brother to Henry for two years through Comcast’s involvement in the Beyond School Walls program run by Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Beyond School Walls brings at-risk kids to work sites twice a month to meet with their “Bigs” and participate in curriculum designed to encourage personal growth and development of life skills. Comcast was the first company to enroll in the Beyond School Walls program and has been participating for nine years.

Henry, entering 5th grade at a Beaverton, Oregon elementary school, had a role in Rene receiving the award. Here is an excerpt from his nomination:

“My Big Brother and I do a lot of fun things together when we are at school and at his work. My favorite time together was when he invited me and my mom to go to his college graduation. This was a very special day for my Big Brother and I am proud of him. Because of him, I want to graduate high school and I also want to go to college and graduate.”

Rene has promised Henry that he will attend both Henry’s high school and college graduations. “Henry has taught me just as much as I’ve tried to instill in him. He’s reminded me of the joy of being a kid, an experience I never really had, trying to keep my family together.”

Rene is a construction manager in Comcast’s engineering department. He lives in King City.
