Affectiva and Wind River Collaborate On Scalable Connected Car Experience with Emotion AI

Joint Effort Accelerates Deployments of In-Cabin Driver State and Occupant Experience Monitoring in Production Vehicles with Varying Levels of Autonomy

DETROIT--()--TU-Automotive – Affectiva, the global leader in Artificial Emotional Intelligence (Emotion AI) and Wind River, a leader in delivering software for the Internet of Things (IoT) and connected vehicles, announced today their collaboration to advance connected car technologies. Affectiva Automotive AI, the first multi-modal in-cabin AI sensing solution, has undergone a testing and validation process with Wind River Helix Cockpit, an automotive consolidation platform. The combined technologies would allow original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers to differentiate their brands by building advanced driver monitoring systems (DMS) and better in-cabin experiences that make driving safer and more enjoyable.

Affectiva and Wind River’s collaboration lets automakers deploy Affectiva’s Emotion AI technology quickly and inexpensively on a consolidated compute platform. Affectiva can identify, from face and voice, complex and nuanced emotional and cognitive states of a vehicle’s occupants across the entire autonomous vehicle spectrum.

“Consumers’ expectations of their vehicles are rapidly changing, and auto-makers must be able to keep up,” said Dr. Rana el Kaliouby, CEO and co-founder, Affectiva. “Affectiva Automotive AI is allowing OEMs to build DMS that are identifying dangerous behavior and improving road safety. In the future, as vehicles become more autonomous, AI will allow for occupant experience monitoring so passengers might receive music and video recommendations based on their mood, as well as lighting and heating adjustments based on comfort and drowsiness levels. This industry is ripe for opportunity and disruption, and our work with Wind River will allow us to accelerate the use of innovative in-cabin technology in production vehicles so OEMs can better deliver on consumer expectations.”

Affectiva Automotive AI measures facial expressions and emotions such as joy, anger and surprise, as well as vocal expressions of anger, arousal and laughter, in real-time. The solution, which runs on embedded and mobile devices, also provides key indicators of drowsiness such as yawning, eye closure and blink rates. Affectiva is collaborating with leading OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers and technology companies like Wind River to bring its solution to production vehicles.

“In order to react appropriately in an instant, a vehicle must be aware of not only its surroundings but also of what is transpiring inside the cabin,” said Marques McCammon, general manager, Connected Vehicle Solutions, Wind River. “Working with Affectiva, Wind River can deliver a secure and intelligent software framework for the connected in-cabin cockpit and help auto-makers forge a safer path for the next-generation vehicle. We’re excited to dive deeper into Emotion AI technology via our collaboration with Affectiva. Although it can be nuanced and subtle, the human emotional experience is still a driving factor in the connected car of the future.”

Helix Cockpit is a comprehensive consolidated compute platform that allows car makers to successfully deliver next-generation features that are production grade while ensuring high standards of safety, security, and quality. Car-makers can use Helix Cockpit, part of the Wind River Helix Chassis portfolio of automotive software products, to deliver rich in-cabin experiences and seamlessly extend their digital lifestyles into connected vehicles.

Affectiva and Wind River will be demonstrating their technology as part of the Wind River Helix Chassis Suitcase Demonstration at TU-Automotive Detroit on June 6-7, 2018 at booth B125.

The demonstration showcases how Affectiva Automotive AI is running on top of the Wind River Helix Chassis software framework for the connected and autonomous car. The framework supports safe and secure consolidated computing that is fast, responsive and can be updated remotely. Future iterations of Affectiva and Wind River’s combined solution will include implementation of the technology in a real-world, production vehicle.
