Axia Women’s Health’s Elizabeth Cherot, MD, MBA, Provides C-Section Protocol that Reduces Length of Stay and Reduces Need for Opioids

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J.--()--Dr. Elizabeth Cherot, a physician with Brunswick Hills OB/GYN, an Axia Women's Health Care Center, is providing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) for repeat Caesarean sections patients -- the first protocol of its kind in the U.S.

ERAS reduces length of stay for patients undergoing elective cesarean section. Dr. Cherot collaborated with physicians in the UK, where it’s employed regularly with patients, and has demonstrated improved quality of care, significant savings and superior patient satisfaction.

Our partnership with leading experts from the UK provides us with the unique opportunity to pioneer this pathway in the U.S.,” says Dr. Cherot. “I’m looking to use this method when appropriate to help my C-section patients recover better.”

A pilot study included 100 low-risk patients diagnosed with repeat cesarean section. The team partnered with Seamless MD on a clinical engagement platform to develop a smartphone application that provides patient education, reminders and remote monitoring. They also used a long-lasting numbing medication at the time of surgery and reduced opioid use for pain relief.

The protocol has successfully reduced the average length of stay from 3.7 to 2.45 days. It also promoted early mobilization, a reduction in narcotic use and increased patient satisfaction.

One of the key benefits of the ERAS approach is a reduced reliance on opioids for pain management after childbirth,” says Dr. Cherot. “Patients, and their newborns, don’t have to suffer the effects of the opioids or run the risk of exposing themselves to the possibility of addiction.”

Patients of Brunswick Hills Obstetrics and Gynecology can participate in this program now, and Axia Women’s Health will soon roll out the protocol in some of their other 100 locations throughout NJ and PA.
