Employees Reveal What Makes Hylant Among the Best Places to Work in Indiana

Firm recognized by Indiana Chamber of Commerce for fifth consecutive year

INDIANAPOLIS--()--Hylant, one of the nation’s largest family-owned, privately held insurance brokerage firms, was named to the 2018 Best Places to Work in Indiana list by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce for the fifth consecutive year.

This recognition comes as no surprise to Hylant employees who say the company is tuned into what its associates value most.

“We don’t have a basketball court upstairs or play ping-pong during lunch,” said Meredith Otto, Client Service Consultant. “But we do have an incredibly supportive culture that puts an emphasis on family first and truly walks the talk when it comes to work/life balance.”

Michelle Brooks, Client Service Executive, agreed, adding that the emphasis on keeping personal time a priority has improved her overall job satisfaction.

“Of course, the work we do is important and we do work hard,” Brooks said. “But even during our busiest times at the office, I can always be there for my family and that’s made a huge impact on my stress level and happiness.”

David Norris, President, said he takes the feedback employees provide on the Best Places to Work survey very seriously and uses it to shape the direction and culture of the agency.

“We want Hylant to be a place where people want to work, and it would be easy to offer simple and fun incentives to motivate our teams,” he said. “But we have placed emphasis on the changes our employees really want, including professional development opportunities, increased performance feedback and flexible working hours.”

Hylant’s approach to employee satisfaction is further supported by national studies. According to the 2016 Deloitte Millennial Survey, job seekers rank a good work/life balance, flextime, professional development and a sense of purpose from their work among the top factors when evaluating job opportunities.

The insurance field continues to grow and is rapidly evolving with new compliance and regulatory changes, and Hylant encourages employees to stay up-to-date through participation in training seminars, conferences and classes.

“Our leaders truly want to see us succeed in this industry,” said Wendi Farling, Client Services Manager. “They fully support continued growth and learning, including the opportunity to study and share what we’ve learned with others during the workday.”

Hylant believes its mission to “strengthen and protect the businesses, employees and communities of their client family by embracing them as their own” begins with providing for their associates.

“We know how good it feels to be appreciated and to have others genuinely care for us, and the positivity is contagious,” Otto said. “It makes it easy to pay it forward to our clients by extending exceptional service and thoughtful care to others.”

Norris said it all comes down to doing what’s right for his team and helping them be their best at work and at home.

“Our employees are an extension of our family and we want them to live their best life,” Norris said. “Hylant strives to provide an environment where each individual is engaged and valued for their contributions at work, but also feels empowered to take time for themselves and their families.”

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce evaluates companies from data gathered from employee surveys. Businesses identified as Best Places to Work in Indiana provide an excellent culture, open communication and opportunities for individual growth. Rankings of the winning companies will be announced at the 13th Annual Best Places to Work in Indiana awards dinner at the Indiana Convention Center on May 3.
