Aquantia Collaborates With KT to Deliver Multi-Gig Ethernet to Korean Homes

Industry Leaders Join Forces to Drive 5/2.5 Gbps Connectivity Over Existing LAN Cabling

SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--Aquantia, a leader in Multi-Gigabit Ethernet, today announced a collaboration with KT Corporation (KT), South Korea’s leading telecommunications provider to deliver 10G, 5G and 2.5 Gbps network speeds over the existing copper cables in today’s networks. As part of this upgrade cycle, in addition to delivering 10G and 5G to its fiber to the home (FTTH) customers, KT plans to deliver a minimum of 2.5G service to customers residing in buildings where the number of copper cables is limited to only 2 pairs. This infrastructure configuration is extremely common in apartments and other small and medium-sized buildings throughout Korea. This joint effort will address the needs of KT as the Korea Ministry of Science and Information Communications Technology (ICT) implements its “10Giga Internet” pilot project.

Korea is one of the world’s most connected countries with nearly 18M broadband subscribers1 and is one of Asia’s largest economies. The Ministry of Science and ICT is aiming for 50% 10Giga Internet coverage by 2022. It is working with leading technology companies to develop the core technologies and full range of equipment necessary to deliver 2.5, 5 and up to 10 times the performance of outdated Gigabit Ethernet.

Jeon Hong-beom, Executive Vice President of the KT Convergence Technical Institute: “The joint development of this Multi-Gig Ethernet technology will allow us to quickly and cost-effectively address the needs of our customers in apartments, houses and buildings across the country. Aquantia is the key partner delivering the fundamental enabling technology to reach our customer base with 10Giga service.”

Faraj Aalaei, Chairman and CEO of Aquantia: “Aquantia is pleased to collaborate with KT to deliver a first of its kind high-speed Ethernet service to homes. Our flexible architecture and market leading solutions are once again being tapped for multiple scenarios of deployment. By enabling true Multi-Gig data transmission rates over the Cat5/5e copper cabling found in multi-unit apartment buildings we’ll enable new classes of service that rely on the delivery of rich content. User experience of on-demand entertainment and ever-expanding cloud applications will benefit greatly from this partnership between Aquantia and KT.”
