CALIENT Edge|640™ Optical Circuit Switch Offers Industry’s Highest Density Fiber Optic Cross Connect

Low latency, low power switch designed for data center, telecommunications and test lab applications

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--()--CALIENT Technologies, Inc., the global leader for optical switching technology, today announced the Edge|640™, a new Optical Circuit Switch (OCS) with 640 fiber-optic cross connections – up to twice the capacity of the company’s market leading S320 OCS.

The Edge|640 was developed for data center, telecommunication and test lab applications in response to growing device counts and the need – due to network virtualization – for increased connectivity. Some key applications for the Edge|640 include:

  • Telecommunications network edge to network edge
  • Wireless network radio-to-baseband units
  • Test lab automation shared test resources
  • Data center GPU, FPGA and storage compute clusters

The Edge|640 is organized into two switching groups of 320 ports each. Devices connected to a switch port on one of the switch groups can be connected to a device on any of the ports in the other switch group. This connectivity is ideal for “wire-once” network applications or for testing applications where devices under test need access to a range of test systems.

Leveraging CALIENT’s 3D microelectrical machine (MEMS) optical mirror technology, the Edge|640 is transparent to data speed and is protocol agnostic, enabling the switch to support any speed optical connection up to 400Gbps.

The all-optical nature of the switch results in very low latency connections. The switch features built-in optical signal power monitoring on each link and features low power consumption of 90 Watts typical.
