Growing demand from automotive industry

The automotive manufacturing segment is one of the largest consumers of abrasive blasting equipment. Abrasive blasting is done on vehicles for surface preparation before the application of paint. Blasting makes the whole surface even by removing burrs and gives it the desired texture. This gives a smoother finish to vehicles after the painting is completed.

Anju Ajaykumar, a lead engineering tools research analyst at Technavio, says, “Abrasive blasting equipment is used during automobile manufacturing as well as while performing restoration work on old vehicles. Vehicle bodies are usually made of metal, which is prone to rusting or corroding over time due to moisture and other chemical reactions. To restore these vehicles, blasting is used to remove the paint or rust from the metal body before repainting.”

Growth in aerospace sector

The aerospace sector is a major end-user of abrasive blasting equipment. Aircraft components must have a smooth finish to ensure superior aerodynamic performance. The aerospace sector utilizes high precision and controlled-environment equipment to perform blasting operations as the components are designed for high safety. Therefore, the sector is one of the prime users of blasting cabinets and blasting rooms.

“Airbus and Boeing are expected to ramp up their production to clear the backlog of new aircraft orders. Airbus has planned to increase the capacity of its assembly plant in China during 2016-2025 to meet the growing demand from the Asian region. The company also set up a new plant in the US in 2015 to increase deliveries to the US market, which is expected to reach full capacity by 2018,” adds Anju.

Infrastructure and construction boom in US and Asia

Abrasive blasting is also used in construction and woodworking applications. Blasting is used to remove paint from old walls, and rust and corrosion from steel materials and pipes. It is also used for surface blasting of rough walls. Also, abrasive blasting is used in building and street cleaning applications. Also, it is used by municipal departments to remove graffiti from walls and other surfaces. The growth in the infrastructure and construction sectors is expected to propel the demand for this equipment.

The construction industry uses abrasive blasting for detailing and profiling of concrete surfaces, which is essential before the surface is bonded with any other coating. Building construction also requires a large amount of steel and wood, which require proper surface finishing before they are used. Steel pipes and girders are usually blasted with abrasives before they are painted.
