LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest market research report on the global handset flash LED modules market provides an analysis of the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2017-2021. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

The global handset flash LED modules market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 21% during the forecast period. The increased demand for smartphones is the major driver for this market. This is due to the emerging demand for dual flash LEDs and programmable flash LEDs. In August 2014, Apple launched the new iPhone 6 with dual flash LED system called dual-tone flash LED. It uses a white LED with an amber LED to improve flash LED lighting.

Handsets with front flash LED modules

Cameras are one of the most used features of the smartphones. Consumers look to buy smartphones with good camera features. To cater to the consumer needs, smartphone manufacturers have started providing more attention to the camera specifications, including front flash LED modules and LED power consumption.

For instance, in April 2017, Sony released Sony Xperia XA1 Dual. It is the latest smartphone that is an excellent companion to click selfies with improved 8 MP front camera with flash LED. HTC Desire 826 is another smartphone with excellent autofocus ultra-pixel front camera and dedicated flash LED for taking selfies.

Competition-driven innovation

The handset flash LED modules market is driven by competition and innovation of technology. Earlier, xenon-based handset flash was used as it is brighter. However, xenon flash cannot provide flash lighting when the camera is in the video mode as it consumes more power. Thus, the vendors came up with flash LEDs, which have the advantage of withstanding the flash in the video mode.

According to Jujhar Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for embedded systems research, “The handset flash modules have shown considerable improvements as the competition among the vendors is increasing. Currently, vendors have evolved from xenon flash to flash LEDs, and in the future, the trend will shift to producing multi-flash, multicolor LEDs, which will be used for multiple applications such as providing notification alerts.”

Declining manufacturing cost of handset flash LED

The cost of manufacturing flash LED lights has declined since 2015 and will continue to decline during the forecast period. The declining ASP of the chips and components used in the manufacture of the LEDs has led to a decline in the ASP of handset flash LED modules. The specific semiconductor components used for manufacturing LEDs are gallium arsenide phosphide (GaAsP), gallium arsenide (GaAs), or gallium phosphide (GaP). The decline in production cost of LED modules is also due to the mass production.

“Advances in electronic technologies are making LED luminaires affordable and practical for mass-production. The penetration and demand for flash LED will increase due to the declining ASP, further providing the opportunity to vendors to reduce the variable cost associated with manufacturing by operating their manufacturing facilities at full capacity,” says Jujhar.
