According to Forbes, companies were ranked by their innovation premium, or the difference between their market capitalization and the net present value of cash flows from existing businesses. Investors use this difference to predict if a company will continue to create profitable new growth.

The Forbes list focused on industries known for investing in innovation, including making measurable research-and-development expenditures.
