Baby Bottles Market to Gain Momentum Owing to the Increasing Production of Formula Milk Until 2021, Says Technavio

LONDON--()--According to the latest market study released by Technavio, the global baby bottles market is expected to reach USD 3.061 billion by 2021, growing at a CAGR of 4%.

This research report titled ‘Global Baby Bottles Market 2017-2021’ provides an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging market trends. To calculate the market size, the report takes into consideration the revenue generated from the retail sales of baby bottles to individual consumers.

Diet can affect the quality of breast milk. Owing to a shift in eating habits, it has become immensely difficult for new mothers to be able to breastfeed their children. A transformation from the regular healthy balanced diet to the increased amount of fast food intake by new mothers has disrupted breastfeeding.

Many lactating mothers, particularly working women and those in single-parent households, opt for formula milk for the baby in place of breast milk. Vendors are coming up with baby formula milk that can be stored for longer durations after preparation, thus providing parents with a longer window for personal errands. Additionally, vendors are now coming up with baby formulas that claim to contain nutrients present in breast milk.

Technavio’s consumer and retail analysts categorize the global baby bottles market into three major product segments. They are:

  • Plastic baby bottles
  • Glass baby bottles
  • Other baby bottles

Global plastic baby bottles market

Since the 1950s, plastic baby bottles have been the most preferred and widely available option for most parents. Plastic bottles are preferred over glass bottles as they are lightweight and not brittle, which make them convenient to use and easy to carry while traveling.

According to Brijesh Kumar Choubey, a lead toys and baby products analyst from Technavio, “The problem with plastic baby bottles lies in the grade of the plastic that is used to manufacture these bottles. All plastic baby bottles are made of grade 7 plastic, a polycarbonate that is shatterproof in nature. This polycarbonate contains a compound called BPA, which, when released into baby food, could cause issues with the hormonal activities in babies.”

Therefore, there has been a widespread ban on baby bottles containing BPA, encompassing many countries, such as those in the EU. This has prompted baby bottle vendors to manufacture BPA-free bottles. However, despite the production of such BPA-free baby bottles, the plastic baby bottles segment is expected to receive a setback from consumer skepticism associated with chemicals involved in the manufacture of plastics. Technavio analysts expect the global plastic baby bottles market will grow at a CAGR of 2.05% during the forecast period.

Global glass baby bottles market

The glass baby bottles segment is the fastest-growing category in the global baby bottles market. The glass baby bottles segment dominated the market until the plastic baby bottles segment took over in the 1950s. Plastic bottles have been preferred over glass bottles due to the convenience provided by the lightweight property of plastic. However, instances of BPA seepage from plastic bottles into baby food have significantly affected their sales. This negative effect of plastic as a material for manufacturing baby bottles has resulted in the loss of its popularity and, in turn, led to the gradual recovery of the glass baby bottles segment.

“Glass baby bottles are especially popular in developed countries such as the US and Canada, where consumer awareness about the harmful effects of BPA and other impurities present in plastic is more widespread. Technavio analysts expect the global glass baby bottles market to grow at a CAGR of above 7% during the forecast period,” says Amit.

Global other baby bottles market

The other baby bottles segment includes baby bottles made from silicone, stainless steel, and polypropylene. These bottles provide the advantages of both plastic and glass baby bottles. Stainless steel baby bottles are chemical-free, bacteria-resistant, and unbreakable. However, these bottles are heavier than their glass and plastic counterparts and cannot be used in freezers because they deform at extremely low temperatures.

Silicone baby bottles, on the other hand, provide the baby with a natural feeding experience. For example, Nuby Silicone Nurser helps the parent feed the baby by gently squeezing the bottom of the bottle. Polypropylene bottles, or PP 5 bottles, are made of a thermoplastic polymer. This material has high strength, is heat-resistant, and is a safer choice than grade 7 plastic bottles. The analysts at Technavio expect the global other plastic baby bottles market to grow at a CAGR of 5.68% during the forecast period.
