ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Menara Networks, a vertically integrated optical IP/Ethernet transport specialist, and IPG Photonics Corporation, the world leader in high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers, announce today the general availability of a turn-key, integrated IP over DWDM 100G solution optimized for metro and data center interconnections that supports plug-and-play compatibility with all major MPLS routers and Ethernet switches and eliminates all mid-span amplifiers in optical links up to 250km or 150 miles.
Menara, the company that pioneered Layer 1/2/3 convergence based on proprietary high speed ASICs and innovative system-in-a-module transceiver designs, has introduced the Atlas DWDM Direct Detection 50 GHz full C-band tunable 100G CFP module that is compliant with the multi-source-agreement (MSA). Menara’s CFP, which plugs directly into the router or switch, generates ITU 50 GHz-grid compliant wavelengths, thereby eliminating the separate transponder devices and back-to-back high-speed optical interfaces used in today’s networks.
IPG, a global leader in optical transmission and amplification, has an extensive optical transmission portfolio including the Optical Services Transport Platform (OSTP) with flat gain, high power Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers and multi-watt Raman amplifiers. IPG’s compact optical amplification solution fits in two Rack Units (2RU) of vertical equipment bay space and eliminates the mid-span optical amplifiers typically required in Data Center Interconnection networks.
The combined solution of Menara’s dispersion-tolerant 100G CFP module and IPG’s compact optical transmission system supports error-free, 100Gbps transmission up to 250km on ITU G.652 optical fiber and can be scaled to support up to 2 terabits per second over a single fiber pair, all while eliminating back-to-back optical connections that require separate transponders and mid-span optical amplifiers.
“We are excited to join forces with IPG Photonics and jointly offer our customers an elegant solution to cope with the tremendous amount of data moving among their data centers as a result of the on-going shift to cloud based services and infrastructure,” announces Siraj Nour ElAhmadi, Menara CEO and Chairman.
“Current 100G solutions further exacerbate the daunting foot-print and power consumption challenges facing data center operators and add to the cost and complexity of deploying 100G links,” adds Dr. George BuAbbud, IPG Photonics’ Vice President of Telecommunications Products. “The challenge is more pronounced for operators that lease fiber and must procure and pay for additional 'cage space' to accommodate optical line amplifiers. Our joint solution not only materially reduces operators total cost of ownership but also significantly reduces their time-to-market.”
“Data center operators are desperately looking for lower cost optical transport for 100G links in the 80-150km range. Not having to allocate separate space for standalone DWDM transponders and negotiate IRUs to power and manage line amplifier sites is of tremendous value to data center operators,” observes Andrew Schmitt, Founder and Lead Analyst at Cignal AI. “The combined Menara/IPG Photonics solution fits within existing CFP installations, offering operators quick turn-ups and fast time-to-market to cope with the cloud dynamics.”
Both Menara DWDM 100G CFP Atlas modules and IPG Photonics OSTP system are in production today. Menara and IPG Photonics joint solution will be showcased in a live demonstration interconnecting IP routers over a 200-km live link at Menara booth #3263 at this year’s Optical Fiber Communications conference and exhibit taking place in Anaheim, CA, from March 22 through March 24.
