Prospect Medical Holdings, Inc. Announces Reopening of Hospital in Bellflower

BELLFLOWER, Calif.--()--Prospect Medical Holdings, Inc. announced today that Los Angeles Community Hospital at Bellflower (formerly Bellflower Medical Center) has reopened, marking the first time in two years that city residents have had access to hospital care within the community.

The 80-bed general acute care hospital, which has been significantly remodeled and renovated, reopened on July 23 after receiving required approvals from the California Department of Public Health and the City of Bellflower.

Initially, the hospital is offering a 32-bed voluntary adult inpatient behavioral unit that, by focusing on providing care for adults who voluntarily seek services for conditions like depression, will help address the growing need for behavioral health services in the region. Other proposed services, including urgent care and medical and surgical inpatient services, will follow. Prospect will undertake a community needs assessment to help determine what additional services to provide.

The hospital, which had been closed by its previous owner in April 2013, leaving Bellflower without a general acute care facility, was acquired by Prospect in May 2014. Since then, the company has made extensive improvements to the hospital in preparation for the reopening. These include ongoing remodeling of the interior – such as installing new floors, walls, fixtures, nursing stations and a new patio for patients – as well as improvements to the façade and replacement of the existing landscaping with drought-resistant plants and trees. The new hospital will initially employ approximately 60 professional/clinical staff and 20 non-clinical employees.

Prospect believes that it is very important for Bellflower to have its own hospital again, and the company is pleased to be able to bring high-quality healthcare services back to the community. The greatest benefit of having the hospital reopen will be better access to healthcare for residents. When the hospital is fully operational, people will no longer have to go outside of the community when they need medical services. And residents who have a friend or loved one in the hospital will no longer have to fight the traffic when they want to visit them.
