CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a leading organization that oversees physician Board Certification in the United States, is pleased to announce that David B. Swanson, PhD, has been appointed to the position of Vice President, Academic Programs and Services, effective January 20, 2015. Dr. Swanson’s experience includes more than 25 years with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), most recently as a Vice President in its Assessment Programs unit. Prior to NBME, he worked at the American Board of Internal Medicine for seven years, focusing on research and development projects.
Dr. Swanson is widely published on topics related to assessment of medical decision making, written and computer-based clinical simulations; assessment of clinical skills with real and standardized patients; patterns of performance on admissions, licensure and certification examinations; and issues in computer- and web-based testing, among others. He is a past recipient of the esteemed Richard Farrow Gold Medal, presented by the Association for the Study of Medical Education in the United Kingdom for outstanding contributions to medical education. In 2014, he was named a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and has an honorary professorial appointment at the University of Melbourne.
