David B. Swanson, PhD, Named Vice President, ABMS Programs and Services

CHICAGO--()--The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a leading organization that oversees physician Board Certification in the United States, is pleased to announce that David B. Swanson, PhD, has been appointed to the position of Vice President, Academic Programs and Services, effective January 20, 2015. Dr. Swanson’s experience includes more than 25 years with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), most recently as a Vice President in its Assessment Programs unit. Prior to NBME, he worked at the American Board of Internal Medicine for seven years, focusing on research and development projects.

Dr. Swanson is widely published on topics related to assessment of medical decision making, written and computer-based clinical simulations; assessment of clinical skills with real and standardized patients; patterns of performance on admissions, licensure and certification examinations; and issues in computer- and web-based testing, among others. He is a past recipient of the esteemed Richard Farrow Gold Medal, presented by the Association for the Study of Medical Education in the United Kingdom for outstanding contributions to medical education. In 2014, he was named a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and has an honorary professorial appointment at the University of Melbourne.

“Dr. Swanson has proven expertise in competency-based evaluation in medicine, encompassing knowledge, attitudes, judgment, and clinical skills,” said Mira Irons, MD, ABMS Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs. “His expertise and leadership will help direct the comprehensive evaluation and assessment strategy that supports the ABMS Member Boards in their Programs for Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification (ABMS MOC®),” she added.

Dr. Swanson received his Bachelor of Arts (psychology) and PhD (educational psychology) from the University of Minnesota.
